Honoring Our Heroes
Join the Banning Centennial in honoring the sacrifices of our city’s heroes on Monday, May 27, 2013, 11 a.m. Help us remember our citizens who gave the ultimate sacrifice to our city and nation. Taking place at the Banning Woman’s Club, we will also pay tribute to the venerable Woman’s Club building and its role in serving our country.
The Fight for Freedom
For 100 years, Banning’s finest have defended our freedoms in every major conflict. The first Banning men reported to be on the battlefront in France during World War I were William Westerfield and Reuel Kendall. By mid-1918, all Banning boys over the age of 18, and many who were younger, were either in the war or were training for service.
During World War I, the recently built Banning Woman’s Club was used for meetings by the Red Cross. Later, hundreds of men from Banning were called to service during World War II.
In January of 1943, the USO leased the Banning Women’s Club, making it possible for men in the armed services to have access to comfortable quarters where they could spend their hours on leave. From that time through February 1946, the Banning Woman’s Club had given up their building to support war efforts and met at other locations. The Red Cross continued to use the building as did the USO. The building was also used for war loan drives.
To date, our research has listed the following fallen heroes:

November 28, 2013: Hmong New Year’s Celebration
Enjoy a Banning Cultural Tradition
The Hmong have lived in Banning since the 1980s after fleeing the highlands of Cambodia at the end of the Vietnam War. Back then, the San Gorgonio Pass Hmong population was around 1,000 but it has since dropped to around 400 as many within their community have moved to other Hmong centers throughout the U.S.
Event Info
Date: Thursday, November 28, 2013, 10 a.m.
Location: Repplier Park, Banning
Cost: Complimentary, lunch provided
About Hmong New Year’s
Every year, the Hmong in the Banning community celebrate their New Year on the Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week in Repplier Park. The celebration begins with a ceremony and speeches at 10 a.m. at The Playhouse Bowl. Complimentary Hmong food is served around noon. The local community, served by the Hmong Archives and Cultural Center, selected Thanksgiving as the time of year to celebrate their New Year because of similarities in both timeframe and climate to their ancient calendar and native country. Hmong New Year’s is a time for young people from the Highlands to gather, meet each other and sometimes marry. It is a happy time for the Hmong!
The public is invited. Hope to see you there!
